As you move your mouse to hover over the painting, ten of the species will 'light up' as you pass the mouse over them. By clicking on these species, a feature page is brought up. The page includes a photograph of that species, a fact about it, its role in a reef ecosystem, and a threat to the species. To view information on another species, simply click on the red 'X' at the top of the feature page to return to the main image.
Plans for the future include providing feature pages for the remaining species depicted in the painting, so check back often for updates.
In celebration of International Year of the Reef 2008 (IYOR 2008), the CRCP created this interactive product to engage visitors at the Ocean Today Kiosk in the Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. The original touch screen version was also available on Ocean Today Kiosks that are located at other zoos, museums, and aquariums around the US. The Interactive Reef was available on the kiosks for three months in Spring of 2008 and may be available again in the future.
The main image of this product is 'Year of the Reef,' Wyland ©2008, which was created to commemorate IYOR 2008. A Giclée of the oil painting hangs in the entrance of the National Aquarium in Washington DC. The image of the painting is used for this project with the artist's permission.
